Spears, Ledger shouldn't be laughed at now

Celebrities spend their time on a pedestal for all to see, a spotlight shining on them so that all the public can study their every move beneath a microscope and criticize them. It's unfair for any human being to have to live with that level of attention on their shoulders, but that's the price paid in return for the fame and the fortune it pays them. With that attention can come a lot of jokes made at their expense. For the most part, I don't think that's a problem. If you can't take a joke or two, how did you even manage the process of working your way up the ladder to the position you're on?It's a tough world, and you have to have a tough skin. However, we should all know that there are limits to when jokes should be made and who they should target.A lot of jokes have been made about Britney Spears, and that's to be expected when someone attacks SUVs with umbrellas, shaves their head and loses a custody battle to Kevin Federline. However, with the news Thursday that Spears had been admitted into the hospital for a "mental evaluation hold," I would hope the jokes cease for a while.

Reliever Williamson agrees to minor league deal with Giants

SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco Giants agreed to terms on a minor league deal with reliever Scott Williamson on Sunday and invited him to spring training.

Williamson, the 1999 NL Rookie of the Year who turns 32 next Sunday, is scheduled to report to the team's spring training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Wednesday with pitchers and catchers.

The right-hander could bolster an already deep bullpen. Williamson spent his first four-plus seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and has also pitched for Boston, the Chicago Cubs, San Diego and then Baltimore last season.

He went 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA in 16 outings in 2007, missing time early in the season while on the disabled list with tightness in his throwing arm. .

Migrating to Flatter, All-IP Wireless Networks

To address consumer demands for better voice and data communications and more advanced services, wireless technology standards have evolved over the last decade from 1G systems to the currently deployed 3G systems. Despite the growth of carrier networks and the evolution of standards, voice and data communications have not evolved in synch. Carriers have historically added data communications as an afterthought to voice network architectures originally conceived in the circuit-switched era, resulting in complex hierarchical networks that support both voice and data.

This type of architecture is expensive, leading to high operating and capital expenditures for service providers and significantly lowering margins in a highly competitive industry. In addition, networks employing cobbled-together voice and data communications systems simply do not have the capacity to provide the rich multimedia services and omnipresent Internet access that todays wireless customers demand.

Vines: Priorities change for Strader

State Rep. Parkey Strader said battling liver cancer has given him a change in priorities, and "you will not see Parkey on the ballot again."

The Republican who represents the 14th District in northwest Knox County disclosed last week that he will not seek re-election after two terms. He previously served as property assessor, first getting elected in 1972 and serving until 2000. He then became chief deputy in the assessor's office.

Strader was diagnosed with cancer on July 5, 2006. A doctor at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston told him he could expect to live 13 months. It's now going on almost 1 1/2 years, he said. He's had multiple surgeries and other treatment.

"Prayers do work," he said.

Strader announced he is resigning as chief deputy to Knox County Property Assessor John Whitehead effective Dec.

For those of you who love abortion so much, you can move to Oregon or California and abort your heart out. Me? I like living in a state that appreciates the value of human life.In the Top 10 Most Pro-Life, number 6 out of 50 for South Dakota isn't too bad. But we can keep working for #1. Maybe if we get the abortion ban passed this year, we'll get #1 next year!

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse scored five Grammys last night: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "Rehab," Best Vocal Album and Best Pop Vocal Performance. She accepted the award live via satellite from London. Her visa request was denied but then accepted at the last minute. Amy chose to perform closer to home. Us Magazine reports:

After accepting her award, an emotional Winehouse, who was joined on stage by her dad and mom, thanked her parents, record label and "incarcerated Blake" — her husband, who has been behind bars since last last year.
"I can't believe I've won 5 awards. It's a shame I couldn't be there to accept the awards but I'm so proud and happy that I had the opportunity to perform for the Grammys in my hometown of London with my family and friends around me," she said.
