Big profit tipped for BHP

BHP Billiton is expected to deliver a strong interim profit tomorrow, and likely formalise its massive takeover offer for rival Rio Tinto.

BHP Billiton's first half profit for fiscal 2008 is set to eclipse the previous corresponding result of $US6.168 billion ($A6.84 billion), analysts say. ABN Amro analyst Warren Edney is forecasting a profit of $US6.3 billion ($A6.99 billion) and says investors will be looking for an update by the resources giant on impact of flooding in Queensland on its coal operations and power issues in South Africa. "BHP may be able to quantify the impact of the floods and I think that will be relatively important," Mr Edney said. "The other key thing will be seeing what they say about the issues of southern African power." Last month, heavy rain in central Queensland forced the closure of a number of coal operations, while electricity shortages in South Africa have disrupted a number of different operations in the country.

Healthy Living Report: Acupuncture Facelift

Shari Hettesheimer is trying something she's never done before. "I don't mind the number of candles on my birthday cake, I just don't want to look or feel it," laughs Shari. She is blessed with a great complexion, but she still would like to smooth some of the lines that 60-years have created. "I have friends who have had the Botox injections and i hadn't convinced myself that was the way to go," said Shari. Instead -- she's trying acupuncture. "Acupuncture isn't about putting needles in the body, it's about doing something," says Jennifer Walther-Liu, acupuncturist at Tri-Health Pavilion Spa and Integrative Health and Medicine Center. Jennifer says acupuncture, often used on the body, can also help frown lines, crows feet and that tell-tale furrow between the brows. She says it also helps sagging skin, facial discoloration, even acne.

Hardware High-Def Sales Split Skewed by Free Blu-ray Disc Players

Recent NPD Group sales data would suggest that the Warner Bros. Blu-ray Disc announcement just before CES 2008 had an immediate and dramatic impact on the sales of high-definition movie players, but new information shows that Blu-ray Disc may not be tipping the scales as heavily as originally thought.

Last week, Digital Bits published NPD numbers showing that 93 percent of new high-definition hardware sold was for Blu-ray Disc. According to BetaNews, however, NPD is not supporting those figures, saying that they were not an official release from the firm and not a long-term indicator of the industry.

While HD DVD did suffer some lost momentum due to the loss of Warner's support, Blu-ray Disc's overwhelming command in the new hardware split was potentially due to free player deals rather than new sales.

Man wounded by gunfire on Uptown parade route, police say

This was the same area of town where a young mother watching the parade with her young son (maybe 4 or 5) and her infant in a stroller left both of them alone for about 20 minutes while she went to go buy cigarettes. Crap like this will continune as long as these kids are pouring back into the city without their parents. Here is an easy fix: Pass a law that prohibits kids under 18 from being at a parade without adult supervision. Then round them all up, impound their skittles cars and fine their parents.

Minister accused of wanting 'return to the workhouse'

The Housing Minister was today accused of risking a "return to the workhouse" after saying the unemployed should have to seek work or lose their council homes.

Caroline Flint said that there was clear evidence that many of the long-term unemployed in social housing could find work with the right support.

She suggested that new council tenants who can work should have to sign "commitment contracts", agreeing to actively seek employment and to retrain to top up their skills.
