It's a great update for a much-loved product. MacBook Air, from Apple: In the history of Apple announcements, this was one of the least surprising: Pretty much everyone in the room at Steve Jobs's Expo keynote was expecting a thin notebook. But they probably weren't expecting this: The MacBook Air is almost frighteningly skinny. And yet it really is a full-fledged Mac, with a 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and reasonable quantities of RAM, hard drive, keyboard, and screen. Sure, you have to give up an optical drive, Ethernet, FireWire, stereo speakers, and a few other amenities. But tell that to the hundreds of Mac users who crowded the Apple booth at Expo, balancing their MacBook Air daintily on their fingertips, and beaming widely. Paratek Pharmaceuticals Announces the Close of $40 Million Private ...
BOSTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Paratek Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has closed the first tranche of a $40 million private financing. Aisling Capital led the round, with additional participation by new investors, D.E. Shaw and Boston Life Science Venture Corporation, and current investors, Nomura Phase4 Ventures, Novartis BioVentures, BioFund Ventures, HBM BioVentures, Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch, BioVeda Fund and Hercules Technology Growth Capital. The second and final tranche is expected to be closed in early 2008. Pacific Growth Equities served as placement agent for the financing. Proceeds of the financing will be used primarily to advance Paratek's lead programs to develop broad-spectrum antibiotics, including two antibiotics for the treatment of resistant bacterial infections such as those caused by Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Obscurity and confinement for migrants in Europe
They are in railroad depots. They are in old grain stores and recycled factories. Some are brand new, others are in adjuncts of prisons. One is on a ship anchored in the Dutch port of Rotterdam. From Ireland to Bulgaria, from Finland to Spain, detention camps for foreigners have mushroomed across the European Union. They have emerged mostly over the past decade, as the region has grown less and less welcoming to migrants. There are now 224 detention camps scattered across the European Union; altogether they can house more than 30,000 people - asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants awaiting deportation - who are often held in administrative detention for as long as 18 months. In a number of EU countries, there is no upper limit on detention length.
