Acne Drug Accutane Ups Cholesterol
In a study involving almost 14,000, mostly young patients taking the drug, elevations in blood cholesterol, triglycerides (a blood fat), and a blood liver function test were more common than have been previously reported. Blood levels returned to normal or to pretreatment levels in the vast majority of patients in the months after they stopped taking Accutane, however. Researchers say this finding is reassuring, but they add that patients should be followed longer to see if there are long-term implications for cardiovascular and liver disease risk. "We do want to know if there are long-term consequences, but that was not a part of this research," researcher Michele Manos, PhD, MPH, tells WebMD. Tighter Controls on Drug First approved in 1982 for the treatment of severe disfiguring acne , Accutane use in women has long been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects.
Novacta Receives 3.5 Million Pounds Strategic Translation Award From ...
Novacta Biosystems, a UK-based anti-infective therapeutics company, announces that the Wellcome Trust, the UK's largest medical research charity, has awarded it £3.5 million as part of the Trust's Strategic Translational Award programme. Novacta will use the award to progress development of a drug which, it is hoped, will help combat hospital-based Clostridium difficile (C.difficile) infections. C. Difficile infections (CDIs) are a growing and serious problem and have, for example, been associated with twice as many deaths in UK hospitals last year as MRSA. Cases of C.difficile infections, which occur in the lower digestive tract, rose by 22 per cent in the past year and affected more than 15,500 people over 65 in the first quarter of 2007. New anti-infective drugs are needed to target C.difficile without depleting other beneficial bacteria in the gut.
Liverpool 5-0 Luton Town
Tom Hicks and George Gillett may be acting up like a pair of clowns, but something needs to change on the pitch now, if not sooner, if only because Jamie Carragher deserves better on his 500th appearance for the club. This is a strong team Liverpool have put out tonight; you'd be forgiven for thinking after three-and-a-half years the penny has finally dropped: Itandje, Arbeloa, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Babel, Crouch, Torres. Subs: Martin, Kewell, Aurelio, Kuyt, Lucas. Luton Town meanwhile are doing what they can, but Don Hutchison in central defence, for goodness sake; they may as well field a wardrobe and be done with it: Brill, Jackson, Don Hutchison for the love of sweet baby Moses, Keane, Goodall, Bell, Robinson, Spring, Currie, Andrew, Talbot.
Peterson update: Sprain, but MRI tomorrow
In college football, you can go 1-9 and be in trouble as a coach, but if your the Alabama coach and your one win is against Auburn, your job is safe. On the other hand, if your the Alabama coach and go 9-1 and the only loss is to Auburn, get your resume ready. Well, if your a Viking coach and you lose to the Packers, your SH*T and need to be fired.. 0-4 with the worst loss to the Packers EVER, then you need to be draw-and-quartered (for the sack of Childress, it's horses pulling your limbs in four different directions) The idiot liquored-up pucker fans will be here taunting us. Wilf (or Wiff if you look at his coaching choices) is from New Jersey (which means he is aready a little slow) does not understand our hatred of the Packers.
Jon Mark Beilue: Gift cards will stop the insanity
Experience is a great teacher, and experience taught me to give up when trying to surprise someone like my wife with a Christmas/birthday/anniversary gift. If I'm told the store, the aisle, the table, the color, the sales associate, the brand - and it's written down - it's even money I'll get it right. If I strike out on my own for that something that's a surprise and they like it, it's an absolute fluke if they do. Such as a very recent birthday when I bought a jewelry box from Penney's for my wife because (a) it would have been perfect on the dresser, and (b) it was the first thing I saw in a nice display when I walked in the store. "Would it hurt your feelings if I took this back and..." No, not at all. In fact, it just reaffirmed I should have bought a gift card in the first place so you could go and shop and take your time and find the perfect item.
