It's not the most obvious choice for the blues, but an arrangement that featured drummer Levon Helm turned the song into a revelation. "At that point, I wanted to do a Dylan song because I had been a fan for a long time," Costello says. "I was trying to think of something that would suit what I was doing. I was going for a soul thing, and that sort of beat came into my mind. "I was thinking about the kind of stuff that Levon did with The Band. We went for one of their vaguely funky kind of beats. I think of it as a slightly slower version of something they would do." Lately, Costello has been fixated on the sounds of Stax Records, the label that nurtured Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MGs, Isaac Hayes and other Memphis icons. While it's a fruitful inspiration, the notion of blending styles is problematic in the blues genre.
Portsmouth man arrested on 3 charges of indecent exposure
Police have arrested a Portsmouth man on three charges of indecent exposure in his backyard. John Whitehead, 51, of the 100 block of Bolling Road, has been charged in connection with incidents on Sept. 9, Sept. 22, and Nov. 14, according to a news release from police department spokeswoman Ann Hope. One of the incidents involved a juvenile, according to Hope. .
