January 2004 - December 2004

Every year at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska a student is picked to win the Distinguished African American Student Award. David M. Huntwork wonders why it's wrong to award a white student who happens to be a native of Africa
Homage to the Count: P. David Hornik has been listening to the great William "Count" Basie for decades but it was only recently that it struck him why the jazzman was one of the greatest ever in his field
Privatize the space program: Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars putting humans on Mars, writes Robert Garmong, George W. Bush should instead consider getting out of the space business altogether
A man's (and woman's) home is a castle: Protecting children from abuse is one of society's highest priorities, says Wendy McElroy, but the power of child welfare agencies is leading to many abuses
Reforming to preserve: An interview with Peter Brimelow: Never one to shy away from controversy, veteran conservative commentator Peter Brimelow discusses education, immigration and the death of the conservative movement with Bernard Chapin
Sauce for the goose: political convention wisdom: No matter what happens in the Iowa caucuses, writes Jackson Murphy, the media will argue that 'conventional wisdom' explains the results
Iowa is key battleground for Dean: Carol Devine-Molin is of the opinion that a Howard Dean victory in Iowa is a must if his campaign isn't to falter, especially with the other candidates breathing down his neck and a party establishment eager for him to fail
Republicans shouldn't rejoice if the Democrats go mad: W.

Jason Kline: Here's what to watch for during Indians spring training

Indians pitchers and catchers report to Winter Haven, Fla., on Friday for the first full-squad workout this weekend. That means we're barely a week away from finding out who is in the best shape of their life, who has had laser eye surgery, who is healthy, which veteran hurler has been trying out a new pitch and a slew of other spring-training clichs. Considering the Tribe's ho-hum offseason, that's about as good as it's going to get.

It looks like 23 players from the 25-man playoff roster a year ago are back, which should make for familiar Opening Day roster, but a pretty boring Grapefruit League run. The top-11 players in at-bats and innings pitched return, the kind of stability managers and front offices love. It might be humdrum, but there's nothing wrong with essentially bringing back the same team that won 96 games last year.

The Phantom Menace

Ethanol, methanol, rubbing alcohol it doesnt matter, as long as it gives their drinks the zing needed to dupe a few desperate drinkers.

Distilleries and sugar refineries sell potable ethanol of varying grades. Cheaper still is industrial-grade alcohol, which is usually spiked with methanol or other toxins to prevent human consumption. Illegal operators either dont know, or dont care.

In some countries, denatured alcohol is dyed green to make it instantly recognizable, but in Egypt it looks just like regular ethyl alcohol, says Maged Safwat, a downtown pharmacist.

Pharmacies once had an annual quota of denatured alcohol to prevent them from selling off their 20-liter bottles to taht el-sillim spirit makers. Most now receive denatured alcohol in dispensable 100 milliliter plastic bottles, a practice that has reduced the incidence of methanol poisoning.

Damned if She Does, Damned if She Doesn't

Even what seems an act of human fault — Mother Teresa's chastising letter to a convent of her sisters — might be a virtuous act of charity. So too might be John Paull II's public scolding of Ernesto Cardenal, the Nicaraguan priest who held a public office in Ortega's Sandinista government.

Jesus would allow his human nature an expression that is an act of charity — he rebuked the money changers for their sin not out of anger, but out of love of God and love of Man.

Living the life of Christ is about becoming becoming more perfectly human, — following Christ's example — not "being perfect."

Who prays to the Pope John Paul II anyway? Devout Catholics and just about no one else. So if they have no "Saint John Paul" to provide greater clout than his current revered state, they can always turn to many other old stand bys as they are always ready with a sympathetic ear.

Softball's best of the west

While we strive for those results, that's not the reason why this project was taken on. Instead, it was to solve an issue that has been a burr in the britches of most who follow, coach and play high school sports on the Western Slope way beyond the 13 years I've been on the scene.

I, along with those folks, have wondered - loudly at times - why it seems athletes who live on this side of the Continental Divide get overlooked when it comes to earning all-state recognition?

For those of you who've read to this point I'm sure you agree.

I, like you, anxiously wait to see who from the Western Slope earns a spot on each of the All-Colorado prep sports teams produced by Rocky Preps and the Denver Post.

Likewise, after reading the results, I've come away scratching my head.

Lemming's Mailbag - Where Will They Go?

Recruiting is an entirely different world than it's ever been before.

What do you think of Florida getting three Top 100s the past few weeks (William Green, Omar Hunter, and Ramon Buchanan)? - Adam (Gainesville, Fla.)

The Florida staff does a great job, but it really comes down to Urban Meyer. He's relentless, aggressive, persistent and smart. They're still in the hunt for No. 3-ranked Julio Jones as well. Florida is making its late push toward potentially being the No. 1 class in the country. Green, Hunter and Buchanan are all big-time gets this late in the game. And it's still not over.

How good is this 2009 QB Matt Barkley that committed to USC? I saw he's considered the early No. 1-ranked junior. Is he as good as Jimmy Clausen was at that stage? - Johnny (Reseda, Calif.)

He's bigger than Clausen was, but they're two different players.
