Andrew Walter made a lot of mistakes, many of them understandable, in his first NFL start Sunday, but his biggest error came after the game, when he defended Randy Moss' weak afternoon.

"I think Jerry Rice dropped a couple of balls,'' he said. "We can't get on a guy for that. He's going to make more plays than not.''

Where do we start? First, dropped passes weren't the problem. Moss halfway gave up on one ball, and didn't fight a defensive back on two more. He sauntered to the huddle several times, with all the enthusiasm of a shift worker punching a clock. He did drop a pass once, when he had to wait for a late throw from Walter and, as a result, absorbed a big hit from Browns free safety Brian Russell.

It would be terribly unfair to blame that drop entirely on Moss ...

BC eliminates UM from bowl contention

The Canes had a valiant fight, but couldn't back it up with enough talent to overcome a Heisman Trophy candidate and Boston College team that scored 14 fourth-quarter points for a 28-14 victory.

The Hurricanes, who had all of 23 seconds to savor a 14-14 tie early in the fourth quarter, ended their regular season with their fourth consecutive loss and sixth loss in seven games -- good for a 5-7 overall record and 2-6 finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Now, when they'd usually be gearing up for Christmas in fill-in-the-city, they're contemplating their worst season since Lou Saban's 3-8 squad in 1977.

''It definitely hurts a lot,'' senior guard Derrick Morse said in a silent, sad locker room. ``It's the first year I'll be home at Christmas. It's my last game as a Hurricane.

Most Breast Cancer Web Pages Contain Reliable Information

But pages focused on complementary or alternative medicine are 15 times more likely to make misleading claims and contain other false information, a new study says.

Moreover, standard measures of quality developed to assess the accuracy of Web pages don't really work, said the authors of the study, published in the March 15 issue of the journal Cancer.

"There is no completely reliable Web site, but the bottom line is more information is always better. But consider the source and be cautious in interpreting what you read," said study senior author Dr. Funda Meric-Bernstam, associate professor of surgical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

"The good news is 95 percent of the information is correct," added Dr.

Three weeks until it begins anew

It's only January, but two early frontrunners for my top 10 CDs of 2008 were releases this week from two Georgia-based bands: The Whigs' Mission Control and the Drive-By Truckers' Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Also, Atlanta band The Selmanaires have just released another excellent CD, Throw in local bands the Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra and Dead Confederate, and it's a really great time for rock in the Atlanta area.

— In sports we demand excellence, rings, etc. Many among us become peeved at anything short of a title or the No. 1 position. And yet in so much of our pop culture, so many Americans are happy to accept, again and again, vapid mediocrity (or worse) and pure hype. Two words: American Idol.

— And one more entry in my I-just-don't-get-these-times file: In this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, in the Pop Culture Grid on page 27, one of four athletes surveyed is Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson.

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton's movie The Hottie and The Nottie completely tanked this weekend. To be honest, I'm surprised it made more than $1.50. But, I'm no box office analyst. Fortunately the folks at Fantasy Moguls are and, like my fifth grade girlfriend, did the math for me:

The final count will show that the critically reviled comedy featuring the seemingly talentless Hilton has sold a meager $25,500 in tickets at 111 locations over the weekend. That's only $230 per screen for theaters that were convinced to book this disaster. That means that, based on an $8 average ticket price, 29 paying customers showed up at each location over the 3-day.

Paris didn't seem too concerned that her acting career is back in the shitter where God himself wants it. She unveiled her new line of shoes at Macy's yesterday and signed autographs for fans.

In the Pink for Valentine's Day

According to the information on the back of my shampoo bottle, 15 percent of women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day. I find that hard to believe. As far as I know, none of my friends have ever done that, and I think I would have run across at least one person sending themselves flowers by now, if almost one out of every seven women did. This is not to say that I can't understand why some women would want to send themselves flowers. Valentine's Day can magnify insecurities about being loved and feeling attractive. Fortunately, there are a few quick fixes that can still make a difference in the appearance of your skin in time for the big day.

A few simple steps can improve the appearance of your skin even at the last minute. Avoid overdrying with soap or toners. Instead, use a gentle, hydrating cleanser, such as Cerave.
