Acne Drug Accutane Ups Cholesterol
In a study involving almost 14,000, mostly young patients taking the drug, elevations in blood cholesterol, triglycerides (a blood fat), and a blood liver function test were more common than have been previously reported. Blood levels returned to normal or to pretreatment levels in the vast majority of patients in the months after they stopped taking Accutane, however. Researchers say this finding is reassuring, but they add that patients should be followed longer to see if there are long-term implications for cardiovascular and liver disease risk. "We do want to know if there are long-term consequences, but that was not a part of this research," researcher Michele Manos, PhD, MPH, tells WebMD. Tighter Controls on Drug First approved in 1982 for the treatment of severe disfiguring acne , Accutane use in women has long been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects.

Microsoft's tardiness for documentation extends DOJ oversight to 2009
Scathing words yesterday from the federal judge overseeing Microsoft's compliance with its antitrust decree, accompanied an order that effectively extends the DOJ's oversight period into the next US presidential administration. Apparently agreeing with the European Commission's assessment that Microsoft has yet to provide adequate documentation for its communications protocols, US District Judge Kathleen Kollar-Kotelly issued an order yesterday extending the Dept. of Justice's oversight period for the company by two years, until November 12, 2009. .
World's biggest observation wheel
We're actually ahead of time and on budget," said David Beevers, general manager of the Singapore Flyer. "It's all systems go." The wheel will start twirling just before dusk Monday evening. The attraction's first three nights were sold out, Mr Beevers said. Companies and individuals paid $7000, an auspicious number in Chinese culture, for the first rides. "Through the month of February... it's a whole series of private events each day that's going to allow us to ramp up to full opening March 1 for the public," said Mr Beevers. .
Toddlers Medicated for Bipolar Disorder in Record Numbers
While I am convinced that the hormonal surge of puberty triggered my bipolar, I realize that everyone is different. (But I will be paying close attention to my own daughter when she hits puberty in a few years.) However, there is no way in HELL, Heaven or on God's green earth that I would EVER give psychiatric drugs to a child, much less a toddler. In my book, that is either just sicko, lazy parenting or parents who meekly obey a doctor's orders without questioning. These are some serious drugs and their effects don't just stop when you stop taking the meds. One of my meds made me lazy and lethargic and was so subtle that it took me 3 years to figure it out and trace the problem back to when I started that particular drug. I've been off that drug now for about 6 months and while things have improved somewhat, I am still not back to the way I was before adding that drug to my daily regimen.
